Project Overview

The Roper Bar Iron Ore project is located in the new Roper Iron Ore Province in the Northern Territory.  Drilling in the 2009 and 2010 field seasons has generated JORC-compliant Inferred Mineral Resource statements for a total of 311Mt @ 40% Fe including DSO (direct shipping ore) of 14.5Mt @ 57.4% Fe.  Exploration and resource drilling is continuing.

The project owner, Western Desert Resources (WDR), engaged Sargon Engineering to prepare a Concept Study to develop a framework for the Project and identify key economic drivers.  This “Phase I” study was delivered October 2010.  The study depicted a low grade iron ore comminution and beneficiation plant, support infrastructure and logistics operation.  The study was audited by Sinclair Knight Merz.  A recent drilling programme and mine plan has taken the project to the Scoping stage.  In order to reduce contingencies and drive the Project forward, WDR engaged Sargon Engineering to update the Phase 1 study to incorporate the latest results.

Solutions Delivered

Sargon Engineering developed a testwork programme, which was carried out at Ammtec and AML. The results of this testwork were used to inform and update the following deliverables:

  • Mass balance showing consumption and production rates
  • Process flow diagrams showing design and configuration of process plant
  • Drawings showing the process plant, major infrastructure requirements and logistics corridor
  • Mechanical equipment list (sized)
  • Project capital and operating cost estimates

Sargon Engineering also supported WDR in the preparation of Notice of Intent documents which were submitted to the Northern Territory Government.

Notable Results

The results of the Phase II Scoping Study helped WDR understand the key economic drivers for the Roper Bar Iron Ore Project, which assisted in securing investment for subsequent stages.
